Numbers look wrong
A month’s figure does not match my transactions.
Most likely that cell has a value you typed over the top of the calculated one. Typed cells show in plain text; calculated ones show in accent-coloured italics. Hover the cell — if a ↺ appears, click it to go back to the calculated figure. See Computed and Typed Values.
A whole year is missing from my statement.
That year has no statement table. Transactions in a year with no table do not appear in the Cash Flow statement or on the dashboard, although they still show in your ledger and in the Spending chart. Add it with Statements → ⋮ → Add New Year. See Statement Years.
My income or spending total seems too high.
Check for transfers filed as income or expenses. Money moved between your own accounts should be a Transfer category so it is excluded from both. See Money In Money Out and Transfers.
A category’s history changed by itself.
Re-categorizing a transaction, or changing a category’s type, applies to all of history, not just going forward. If you need the change from a date onwards only, make a new category and move the recent transactions to it.
The Spending chart is missing the current month.
By design. The window always ends at the last complete month, so a part-finished month cannot look like a collapse in every category.
Things are empty
The dashboard has nothing in it.
If you just imported older history: the dashboard opens on the current month. Step it back.
If Net Worth and Capital Snapshot are the empty ones: those read your Balance Sheet, which is separate from your transactions. See Balances From Your Statement.
The Balance Sheet has no columns.
A fresh database has no accounts, because an account name is something only you can supply. Your first import creates one. See Accounts.
The Spending page says “No spending to chart yet”.
No transactions in the window are categorized as expenses. Either nothing has been imported, or nothing has been categorized. Check the badge next to Transactions in the sidebar.
The forecast line is flat at zero.
The starting account has no Balance Sheet figure. Enter one for it and the projection becomes real.
Categorization
Nothing is being categorized automatically.
Check Settings → Preferences → Transactions → Automatic Categorization is On.
Something keeps being filed in the wrong category.
A learned rule is doing it. Clear the category on one of those transactions — that forgets the rule — then set the right one, which teaches the new one.
A category I deleted still appears somewhere.
Deleting a category is blocked while transactions reference it, so this should not happen. If a chart still shows it, reload the page.
Saving
“Couldn’t save your change — it hasn’t been stored.”
The value you typed did not reach your database. Type it again. If it keeps happening, close and reopen the app — and check that your database file is not on a drive that has disconnected or filled up.
My edit disappeared when I navigated away.
It should not — pending edits are flushed when you leave a page. If it did, the write failed; you would have seen the message above.
Database and password
The app is asking for a password and I do not know it.
Your database is encrypted and the password cannot be recovered. Use “Open a different database…” on the unlock prompt to open another file, or start fresh with File → New Database.
The app locked itself while I was reading.
Auto-lock fires after inactivity. Increase the timer, or switch it off, in Preferences → Security.
“Not an Aventurine database” when opening a file.
The file is not an Aventurine database, or it is a different kind of database file. Check you picked the right one.
The file will not open and reports a problem.
The file is damaged. Your current database stays open — Aventurine never switches to a file it could not validate. Restore your most recent backup. See Backing Up Your Data.
I cannot find my database file.
Its name is in the centre of the title bar, and File → Save Database As opens on its current folder. If you never created one, it is the app’s default file in your user profile.
Display
Text is too small or too large.
Ctrl/Cmd + Plus and Ctrl/Cmd + Minus, or the Zoom control in Preferences → Appearance. Ctrl/Cmd + 0 resets.
I want more rows on screen.
Preferences → Appearance → Display Density → Compact.
Amounts show the wrong currency symbol or number style.
Preferences → Format. These are display settings — your stored figures never change, so switching is always safe.
A long category name is cut off.
Category names cap at 18 characters because of the column headings and row pills. Shorten it in Statements → Cash Flow → ⋮ → Manage Categories.
Starting over
I want to clear my transactions but keep everything else.
Preferences → Transactions → Delete All…, typing DELETE to confirm. Categories, learned rules, the Balance Sheet, and every setting survive.
I want to start completely fresh.
File → New Database. The old file is left alone on disk, so you can go back to it.
